When weariness strikes: Do not grow weary in doing good...

  • 3 min read

Do not grow weary in doing good, mothers. The Lord sees your heart and encourages us to be consistent to "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)

I've lost count of the moments I've retreated to my room, overwhelmed and concerned about the tendencies and character traits my children have displayed. Sometimes, it seems as though my faithfulness, intention, and consistency don't leave a mark on them.
But let's take a moment to consider the goodness of God. In His graciousness, He has blessed us with the gift of prayer, allowing us to intercede for our children's hearts.Furthermore, He has granted us His word as a source of truth and surrounded us with a community of believers for mutual encouragement and shared conviction in the Holy Spirit. So, even if you're going through a challenging phase with your child, remain anchored in the Biblical truths, knowing the importance of guiding and nurturing our children's hearts with consistency.

Our ultimate goal in guiding our children's hearts should be to mold them in the image of Christ. Yes, instilling virtues such as kindness, hospitality, honesty, and gentleness are pivotal not just for their worldly success but for their spiritual growth. The Bible reminds us of the responsibility on us as parents. We are entrusted with these precious souls, and it's our divine duty to shepherd and nurture them. As it is written:

Proverbs 22:6 - "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."

Ephesians 6:4 - "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 - "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Nurturing our children's hearts is essentially molding their character. I don't want the phrase "Teach Character" to sound like just another trendy slogan or make it seem too intricate. Our mission should be to guide our children's hearts towards reflecting Christ, for as it is written, "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). Our actions and the words we say are direct reflections of what resides within our hearts.

I encourage you to lean into the challenges and move forward with Christ as your anchor. He has equipped us with the means to guide our children's hearts, and His word empowers us to remain steadfast in his truth. I've witnessed His hand at work in my own household. He's stood by me during chaotic times, answered my prayers, and shown kindness to my little ones. I'm beginning to see my children's hearts gravitating towards a deep love for Him, a love that is reflecting in their words and deeds. True heart change.
